Summer Freshness in a Vase
How to Keep Cut Flowers Fresh for Longer
A bouquet on the table instantly adds atmosphere to your home—especially in summer, when flowers are at their most colorful. But those warm days and sultry nights can cause cut flowers to wilt more quickly. Fortunately, with a few simple tricks, you can enjoy their beauty for even longer.
💧 1. Fresh water is sacred
Change the water every other day—or even daily during hot weather. Lukewarm water helps flowers absorb water better than cold water. Don’t forget to thoroughly clean the vase: bacteria are the biggest enemy.
✂️ 2. Cut stems at an angle = longer life
Always cut 1 to 2 centimeters off the stems with a sharp knife, at an angle, to increase the surface area for water absorption. Repeat this every few days.
🌿 3. Keep leaves out of the water
Leaves submerged in water will rot, shortening the bouquet’s lifespan. Remove them to keep the water clear and fresh.
☀️ 4. Avoid direct sunlight and heat sources
Don’t place your flowers in direct sunlight or next to a fruit bowl (ethylene gas = faster wilting). Choose a cool, shaded spot.
Also watch out for drafts! Don’t place the flowers between open windows.
🌸 5. Use flower food
Most bouquets come with a packet of flower food—use it! It contains sugars for fuller blooms and antibacterial agents for maximum longevity.
With these tips, your cut flowers will easily withstand the summer heat and keep shining as if freshly picked.
